For years, Vomera Abandi Association has been standing alongside some of the most vulnerable people in Burundi, particularly widows, orphans, prisoners, vulnerable patients, and families facing extreme hardship. Founded on Christian values, the association believes that faith must be expressed through practical compassion and action.
Its work has touched lives in different ways, responding to urgent needs while also seeking lasting change.
Giving Widows a Safe Place to Call Home

One of the association’s most visible interventions has been the construction of homes for widows living in extremely poor conditions. Many of these women lived in fragile huts with holes in the walls and roofs, offering little protection from rain, wind, and cold.
Vomera Abandi identifies those facing the most urgent housing needs and builds decent homes for them. The beneficiaries also receive essential household equipment to help them start a safer and more dignified life.
So far, seven houses have been completed, while the construction of another is underway.
For the women who receive them, these homes mean far more than shelter. They bring security, dignity, and renewed hope. One beneficiary, overcome with emotion after receiving her home, described the moment as the fulfillment of God’s promise.
Supporting Patients Who Cannot Afford Treatment
The association also reaches vulnerable people in hospitals. Some patients cannot afford medical bills, while others struggle to obtain food and basic hygiene items during their treatment.
Vomera Abandi has helped pay medical expenses, provided food and hygiene supplies, and visited patients to encourage and pray with them.
Among those supported was a child suffering from a serious illness affecting the tongue. After treatment in local facilities was unsuccessful, the child was referred to Bujumbura for surgery. With no means to pay for the treatment, the family received assistance from Vomera Abandi, allowing the child to undergo the necessary operation.
Remembering Prisoners
The association’s compassion also extends to people in prison. Through prison visits, Vomera Abandi provides food, clothing, and encouragement to inmates who are often separated from their families and easily forgotten.
These visits are not only about material assistance. They are also an opportunity to listen, encourage, pray, and remind prisoners that they still have dignity and value.
Caring for Orphans and Vulnerable Children
Vomera Abandi has also opened its doors to children who have lost both parents. The association supports vulnerable children with basic needs and education, helping them grow in a safer environment and giving them hope for the future.
The first orphan received by the association has now reached Grade Seven, reflecting the importance of consistent care and educational support.
The association hopes to expand this work by establishing an orphanage and creating greater opportunities for vulnerable children to access quality education and healthcare.
Reaching Families With Basic Needs

The work does not stop with houses, hospitals, prisons, or orphaned children. In different communities, Vomera Abandi has distributed food, clothing, hygiene items, and other essential support to vulnerable people.
Whenever the association visits communities to deliver assistance, it seeks to identify other urgent needs and respond where possible.
Through these interventions, hundreds of vulnerable people have been reached, offering practical help to families who often have very limited resources.
A Growing Mission
What began with small personal acts of compassion has grown into a wider Christian movement. The association continues to rely largely on the voluntary contributions of its members, making it possible to serve despite limited resources.
The needs, however, remain far greater than the available contributions. Transportation to reach communities and the cost of responding to growing needs are among the challenges facing the association.
Yet the vision remains strong: more homes for widows, better support for orphaned children, greater access to healthcare and education, and eventually the establishment of schools, an orphanage, and a hospital.
Vomera Abandi’s journey is a reminder that meaningful change can begin with something small—a helping hand, a visit, a contribution, or a decision to stand beside someone who is suffering.
Through faith, sacrifice, and compassion, the association continues to give hope, restore dignity, and stand with those who need it most.
